Safety Tips for Motorcyclists

While there is nothing that can beat the thrill and freedom of riding a motorcycle, it is significantly more risky than driving a car. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a crash involving a motorcyclist is approximately 30 times more likely to be fatal compared to accidents with only motor vehicles.

Yet, there are many riders who are able to avoid accidents and enjoy their motorcycles without fear of injury. This is because they follow standard motorcycle safety practices to help them stay on the safe side of riding.

The following are important safety tips for motorcycle riders:

  • Wear safety gear at all times. In addition to wearing a DOT-approved helmet, leather clothing, boots with nonskid soles, and protective gloves can protect your body from severe injuries. Additionally, consider putting reflective tape on your clothing to make it easier for other motorists to see you.
  • Inspect your motorcycle every time before you ride. Check the tire pressure, lights, and mirrors before hitting the road. Ensure that there aren’t any loose bolts, leaks and other possible mechanical issues. You also must be diligent about routine maintenance.
  • Obey all traffic rules. When it comes to speed, the faster you go, the longer it will take you to stop. So always adhere to the posted speed limits.
  • Ride defensively. Did you know that nearly two-thirds of all motorcycle accidents are caused by a motorist violating a rider’s right of way? Do not assume that a driver can see you. Ride with your headlights on, keep an eye out for turning vehicles, signal well in advance before making a turn or switching lanes, and stay out of a driver’s blind spot.
  • Be alert. Many accidents occur because of motorcyclist rides under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Furthermore, fatigue can impair your ability to react in a timely manner.
