The death of a 14-year-old boy on Feb. 24, 2020, is the latest in a series
of tragedies from fatal car accidents in the Tampa Bay Area this month.
The crash that killed the teenager originally took place on
Saturday, Feb. 22 near Turkey Creek Road when a 2008 Ford Escape driven by a 17-year-old crossed the center line
and hit a delivery truck head-on. The driver and another 15-year-old passenger
died at the scene, but the 14-year-old who died Monday was airlifted to
Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center in critical condition. The 61-year-old
driver of the delivery truck was also transported to the hospital in serious
condition, but the
Tampa Bay Times did not provide any updates as to his condition.
On the same day, another wrong-way collision claimed the life of a 43-year-old
man who crossed the grass median of Adamo Drive and began traveling eastbound
in the westbound lane. According to
Fox 13 News, the Toyota Camry collided with a concrete barrier wall before being redirected
into the travel lanes. The car then collided head-on with another vehicle,
becoming airborne and striking a third vehicle. Eventually, the Camry
careened off the Adamo Drive Bridge over the Tampa Bypass Canal. The vehicle
sank to the bottom and took approximately 3 hours for authorities to remove
from the water. One man died and 3 people were taken to the hospital with
minor injuries.
Saturday, Feb. 22 also marked the death of an 84-year-old woman who succumbed
to her injuries
weeks after sustaining them in a Feb. 6 car accident in Pasco County. The woman was a passenger in
a 2008 Mercedes that was involved in a left-turn collision at the intersection
of Beacon Woods Drive and US-19. Per the Florida Highway Patrol, the Mercedes
entered the path of a motorcyclist, who promptly collided with the vehicle’s
passenger side. Both the car and the motorcycle spun and were struck by
a 2002 Chrysler van. All individuals involved in the collision suffered
serious injuries. One fatality occurred on Saturday at the Regional Medical
Center Bayonet Point.
