According to research conducted by the
National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center, the following are the leading causes of
spinal cord injuries:
#1: Car Accidents
Research shows that
car accidents are the leading cause of
spinal cord injuries. 7,205 males and 2,402 females suffered spinal cord injuries in 2014.
#2: Falls
From tripping on a step while you are going up the stairs to fainting after
witnessing a shocking event, there are a number of situations that can
cause a person to fall and injure their spine. In 2014, falls were the
second-leading cause of spinal cord injuries in the United States, with
5,406 males and 1,262 female’s reporting this
catastrophic injury.
#3: Gunshot Wounds
Gunshot wounds can destroy bone and sever the spinal cord. Gun-related
injuries accounted for 4,163 male and 572 female spinal cord injuries in 2014.
#4: Diving Into a Body of Water
Any time you jump head-first into a pool or lake, you risk serious injury.
People who injure themselves attempting to dive often don’t realize
how shallow the water really is until it’s too late. In 2014; 1,718
men sustained spinal cord injuries after trying to dive into a body of
water, while just 122 women experienced the same type of injury from diving.
#5: Motorcycle Accidents
Motorcyclists do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers
in cars and trucks, which means accident injuries can often be devastating.
According to statistics, 1,695 men and 145 women suffered spinal cord
injuries due to
motorcycle accidents in 2014.
