Bad Driving Habits that Often Result in Crashes

|

Most drivers assume they are safe drivers who are in compliance with rules of the road at all times. However, there are many bad habits ingrained in American drivers that are considered common.

Unfortunately, these common bad habits cost drivers thousands of dollars in repairs, fines, and increased auto insurance rates. Being aware of your mistakes is the first step to breaking these habits.

The following are common bad driving habits:

  • Speeding – Whether on residential roads or highways, most people are guilty of driving a few miles over the posted speed limit. While it may not sound like much, an increase in speed is also an increase in the amount of time you must stop to avoid a car accident.
  • Distracted driving – Distractions can take your hands away from the steering wheel, your eyes away from the road, and your mind away from the primary task of driving. Common distractions include cellphones, other passengers, GPS devices, as well as food and beverages.
  • Failing to use turn signals – Your turn signals let the cars behind you know your next move. Neglecting to use your turn signals can lead to a collision.
  • Tailgating – Meaning “following too closely,” tailgating is one of the main causes of rear-end accidents. If the driver ahead of stops abruptly, you won’t have enough space to brake without hitting him or her.
  • Rushing yellow lights – You should not have to speed up to get through an intersection. Not only is it a bad habit, but it is also extremely dangerous for you, other drivers, and pedestrians alike.
  • Reckless driving – Actions such as cutting other drivers off or ignoring traffic signals not only result in car accidents, but can also lead to a traffic citation.
